Owen Sound, located on beautiful Georgian Bay offers a wide variety of entertainment and shopping delights for visitors of all ages. The city and its surrounding area has a rich history, parks and other natural areas for bird watchers, hikers, cross country skiers, etc.

The Festival of Northern Lights

One of the city’s most famous attractions occurs from mid-November to mid-January. The Festival of Northern Lights welcomes thousands of visitors from individuals, to families, to tour buses, to view the multitude of brightly colored lighted displays that dominate the downtown core of the city from the inner harbor to Harrison Park.

Summer Folk

For many decades Summer Folk has been hosted here for famous and budding stars of the folk music world. Held at Kelso Beach park, Summerfolk is an enjoyable event by the water's edge of the harbor. Many people have made this event their yearly trek since the beginning. Summerfolk is usually held in mid-August each summer.

Owen Sound's Crown Jewel:
Harrison Park

Perhaps the jewel of the City of Owen Sound is Harrison Park. The largest municipally-owned park in North America, Harrison Park features fine dining, rustic campgrounds, picnic areas, playgrounds, mini golf, a bird sanctuary, hiking trails along scenic routes, canoes, paddle boats, waterfalls and in the winter there are challenging cross country ski trails and an artificial ice surface.

Black History

Owen Sound was the northern terminus for the Underground Railway. There are many historic sites honouring the black community in the City. The Grey County Archives and the Owen Sound Library contain a great deal of information about the unique African American history in the area. Every summer during the long weekend at the first of August, Harrison Park is the host venue for Emancipation Day celebrations.

Owen Sound: Fishing

The entire region has many lakes, rivers and of course, Georgian Bay, for fishing both in summer and ice fishing in winter. There are also many fishing derbies held each year throughout the area. One of the most popular is the Salmon Spectacular Fishing Derby held each summer in August in the harbor.

SHOPPING

Owen Sound offers many unique and varied shopping opportunities. The 16th Street East commercial strip featuring Heritage Place Mall, big box stores to small specialty shops and grocery stores. On 10th Street West there are grocery stores as well as numerous small shops in various strip malls along the route. Downtown features many fine stores, but if you are in the city on Saturday morning make sure that you visit the Farmers Market, located behind City Hall. At the market you will find local produce, including fresh fish, and products produced by local artisans and farmers.

About Owen Sound

12-year-old Walks to Owen Sound in 1851 from the journal of a teenage boy's experience travelling with his brother in the untamed Upper Canadian wilderness.

The Bible was the Law in the 1840s in this region because the region was unrepresented by the government peace and  justice were community responsibilities.
