Owen Sound Ontario: A Unique Perspective

Owen Sound Ontario book provides a unique and humorous perspective about this Georgian Bay port and hockey hotbed.

Writing and researching Owen Sound Ontario local history is interesting, and at times it can be extremely entertaining. Everyone has a story to tell about their lives and the community in which they grew up. When someone stops and takes the time to put their memories on paper, the results are often rewarding, not only to the writer, but also to those who read those memoirs.

Owen Sound Ontario:
"Under the Elephant's Tail"

While browsing through the local history shelves at the library, I found a little book entitled Under the Elephant's Tail by A.A. Hartford. It is the author's story about growing up in Owen Sound Ontario.

During my university days, and later, when I lived in Toronto, whenever I told someone that I was born and raised in Owen Sound Ontario, their response was often, aha! "you are from the elephant's ..." - I am sure that you know this old joke without me repeating it in full here!

Therefore, the title of Hartford's book jumped out at me as if it was written in neon lights!

Historical events are usually written from an adult's perspective. Therefore this book is interesting because it is written from author's point of view as a child.

For instance, Hartford was four years old when Owen Sound Ontario became a city on July 1, 1920. Her perspective are quite different from the coverage given the celebrations that day in the local newspaper. The details of the day included local war hero Billy Bishop and a squadron of World War 1 pilots delivering the charter proclaiming Owen Sound's status as a city from the Lieutenant-Governor. The pilots then performed an air show, and offered rides over the city for $10.00 a person.

Visitors came from all across the province of Ontario, and beyond. Besides the air show, a parade, fireworks, a street dance there were many other festivities including football, boxing and baseball tournaments. But Hartford's memory of the day was limited. She wrote of "a good time was had by all, but the only thing I can remember was the arrival of Billy Bishop and my look at an airplane; the fact that Owen Sound became a city that day was incidental."

Billy Bishop was not the only Owen Sound Ontario person, or persons, to be larger than life to youngsters growing up in this community in the years after the First World War. The 1924 Owen Sound Greys became idols to the youngsters of the region when they captured the national junior hockey title.

Hartford remembers standing with her family late into the night in front of the Sun Times office waiting for the results of the final game between the Greys and Calgary. They sang a song which had been penned by a local music teacher, Mr. Dean:

"I know where the Cup comes in 1924

Right here to Owen Sound

Where it has never been before

Who are the boys who won this fame?

Keeling, Dutch Cain, Teddy Graham,

Cooney, he's the centre

Of the great big fight,

Hedley, he's the goalie

In their every night,...

That was how the song went. But unfortunately, Hartford did not include the rest of the words.

The 1924 Greys were such heroes that when the Hartford family's pet rabbit had babies, they named the bunnies after members of the championship team! Sadly, the following summer, the bunny named Hedley Smith died. The children held a funeral which was attended by the children of the neighbourhood.

Hartford remembered, "We covered the grave with stink-weeds, and placed a small wooden cross to mark the place of internment. Before we left, the stink-weeds had been well watered by the tears of sad, little hockey fans."
